Between 1997 and 2005, Don McLaughlin provided statistical consulting for the U.S. Department of Education, including a report on the potential for using state assessment data to enhance NAEP.  His work also included biostatistical consulting for the Palo Alto Medical Foundation.

As Chief Scientist, in addition to work on specific projects, Don McLaughlin oversaw the quality of research carried out in AIR's Palo Alto office. Since joining AIR in 1973 as Director of Studies for Project TALENT, he directed more than 20 projects and played a major role in planning and data analysis in another 20. He is a recognized expert in mathematical modeling and computing as well as in statistics, psychometrics, and experimental design.
